Sustainable Shunter Trains

Clayton Equipment specialises in the design, manufacturing and servicing of bespoke trains. Our cutting-edge rail solutions deliver cost-effective, safe, and low-emission shunters. As market and regulatory demands evolve, we are increasingly focusing on zero-emission freight trains for global operations.

As the global rail decarbonisation process gathers pace, more and more rail providers and companies reliant on train power are requiring zero emission alternatives. Diesel trains are set to be phased out completely by 2040, with the full-scale electrification of the rail network required to make this happen. Nonetheless, there is a need for battery and hybrid trains in cases where electrifying public and private rail networks is unfeasible, excessively costly, or when it is simply the more sensible choice.

At Clayton our range of sustainable trains has been created to meet this need and are highly customisable to meet the specific needs of our customers. Whether it’s rail freight companies, mining, mainline or construction/tunnelling, our battery and hybrid trains are designed to meet zero emission requirements.

Always Driving Forward

Since 1931 we have endeavoured to be a forward focussed company, always looking to create innovative train and rail infrastructure solutions that allow our customers to lead in their respective industries. Our hybrid and battery trains can offer a more than 600 tonne CO2 reduction per year compared to older shunters and we use the latest battery technology to enable long-range haulage for UK freight trains. At Clayton Equipment, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. With our cutting-edge technologies, we ensure our locomotives meet the highest performance and efficiency standards. A prime example of this is our LocoWatch condition-based monitoring system, a revolutionary tool designed to provide real-time insights into the operational health of our locomotives.

LocoWatch constantly monitors key locomotive parameters, allowing operators to detect issues before they escalate, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. The system provides accurate data on engine performance, battery status, and wear and tear, ensuring your equipment is always running at optimal levels. A Choice Of Operation Modes

Our zero emission freight trains can operate in two modes: plug-in mode and self-charging mode. Plug-in mode delivers 100% fuel saving and zero emissions, typically resulting in a 600 tonne CO2 reduction per year compared to older shunters. Self-charging hybrid mode can result in a 40% fuel saving, 54% reduction in CO2, 97% reduction in NOx 91% reduction in hydrocarbons and 99% reduction in particulate matter.

Beyond our selection of customisable zero emission trains, at Clayton Equipment we also offer a range of services including maintenance, refurbishments and spare parts supply. Our aim is to ensure our customers’ fleets remain operational and efficient throughout their lifespan.

Getting Ahead Of The Curve

As the global rail infrastructure decarbonises over the next two decades, make sure you’re ahead of the curve by investing in zero emission trains for your organisation. Our cost-effective zero emission shunter trains have a wide variety of applications across various industries, with battery and hybrid options for long-range haulage.
